CPCMG RECOGNIZED WITH 2021 JOY IN MEDICINE™ DISTINCTION

CPCMG has been named a recipient of the American Medical Association’s Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program. CPCMG is one of 44 health systems nationwide who received the award, and one of only four health systems recognized in California.

Launched in 2019, the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program is a part of the AMA’s initiative to counter burnout among physicians, nurses, and other health care workers. A national study examining the experiences of physicians and other health care workers who worked in health care systems during the COVID-19 pandemic found that 38% self-reported experiencing anxiety or depression, while 43% suffered from work overload and 49% had burnout.

“CPCMG recognized long before the pandemic began, the importance of provider and staff wellness as a core pillar to our group’s success,” said Dr. Adam Breslow, president and CEO. “Our efforts have centered on teamwork, innovation, gratitude, transparency, and resilience. This has translated into exceptional patient care and performance especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Candidates for the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program were evaluated according to their documented efforts to reduce work-related burnout through system level drivers. Scoring criteria was based on demonstrated competencies in commitment, assessment, leadership, efficiency of practice environment, teamwork, and support.

To receive this award, CPCMG demonstrated its commitment to clinician wellbeing through its development of a formalized well-being committee; yearly assessment of clinician burnout and sharing of results with leadership; showing its “Work outside of Work” metrics using EHR data; appointing a CPCMG clinician to be responsible for leading and completing query to de-implement unnecessary administrative burdens; and implementing a formal peer support program to help clinicians dealing with adverse events.

Future plans include leadership development and a comprehensive Care Team Redesign effort. This initiative includes physician leaders in partnership with leaders from CPCMG’s management company. Together they will migrate aspects of patient care, communication, and IT innovations from a traditional to a team-based care model. The goal of this transition is to optimize provider well-being, staff empowerment, patient satisfaction, and efficiency of practice, while providing coordinated, patient-centered and equitable access to the best possible care and services.
