Meet Dr. Trevor Henderson

This San Diego native is married to his high school sweetheart and loves sports, including cheering on his two sons at their sporting events. Meet Dr. Trevor Henderson, pediatrician at CPCMG Alvarado, who enjoys watching children and families grow.

At what CPCMG office do you work?
I work at the Alvarado office.

How long have you worked there?
I have worked with CPCMG for nine years.

Where did you grow up? If you didn’t grow up in the San Diego area, what brought you to southern California?
I grew up in San Diego’s East County in the Mount Helix area and attended Monte Vista High School. The only time I have spent outside of San Diego is when I attended college at the University of California at Berkeley. I attended the University of California at San Diego for both medical school and pediatric residency training. I love San Diego and I truly enjoy working in the same area that I grew up in.

Why did you decide to become a pediatrician? What attracted you to pediatrics? Did you consider other specialties?
My father is a physician and from a young age I was inspired to go to medical school. I always loved science and I was drawn to spending my career helping other. Choosing to a pediatrician is one of the best decisions that I have ever made. I love working with children. Their smiles are contagious and help to keep me young. Having been a pediatrician now for 17 years, I have had the opportunity to send off patients to college after having been at their deliveries. Watching children grow and families grow is immensely satisfying.

What do you enjoy most about working with children, parents and families?
There is nothing more important in my life than the health of my children. It is extremely satisfying spending my life’s work helping to keep children in good health. I am confident that I have the best job in the world.

Tell us about your family. Do you have children? What do you like to do as a family?
I have been happily married for 23 years after marrying my high school sweetheart, Jill, in 1994. My wife also loves helping children and works as a reading resource teacher in an elementary school. We have two incredible sons. My son Riley is 17 and my son Tanner is 15. My wife and I love rooting them on at their tennis, water polo and lacrosse games. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to travel as a family to five continents.

What is some important life advice (beyond what you learned in medical school) that you can give to parents for their children?
As a parent of two high school-aged children, my number one piece of advice is to enjoy the journey while it lasts. I dread the thought of my children leaving the nest in the next 3 years. While parenting can be taxing at times, make sure to have fun with your children and cherish every moment.

How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle? Any tips to share?
Personally, I enjoy running and have run three marathons. I also enjoy playing golf and I play basketball on a weekly basis. I think it is important to stay active. It’s especially helpful if you can find a consistent physical activity that you love doing so that it doesn’t have to feel like work.

What are your favorite pastimes/hobbies? What else do you like to do in your spare time? Do you volunteer in your community?
I am a sports nut. I love cheering on my own children in their athletic endeavors and rooting on my Cal Bears. I am a member of my son’s high school foundation and enjoy participating in health fairs at local schools.
