Five tips to help cope with acne

Getting a zit might seem like a rite of passage into the teen years but for many, acne is a long-term skin condition requires medical help.

What causes acne?
Dead skin cells and oil from the skin will clog hair follicles, resulting in blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, and oily skin (unfortunately, scarring is also possible).

If your teen is dealing with breakouts, encourage them to follow these five tips to help their skin. In addition, don’t hesitate to reach out to your CPCMG provider for help.

  1. Don’t ever squeeze or pop zits, no matter how tempting it might be. Not only can your chances of infection increase, but there’s a possibility of scarring.
  1. Keep your hands away from your face. You carry bacteria on your hands from everything you touch during the day, and you can transfer those germs to your face. Be sure to wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer.
  1. Don’t over wash your face. Washing to much can be irritating and even dry out the skin.
  1. Moisturize every day using a limited ingredient moisturizer made for the face. Also, maintaining a healthy diet and drinking water will help your skin stay hydrated.
  1. Don’t get too much sun. With or without acne, sun exposure can damage your skin and could aggravate breakouts. Look for a facial sunscreen, wear a hat and limit your time in the sun between 10am and 2pm.
