Safe Driving During the Holidays

If you think alcohol is the only thing that can affect your ability to drive, think again. You can also get a DUI for driving under the influence of many legal and illegal substances that can impact your reaction times and ability to drive safely. This includes gummies with THC, marijuana, opioids, methamphetamines and even some over the counter cold and flu medications.

The holidays are filled with festivities and parties with family and friends. If an event involves alcohol or other substances, be honest about how you will celebrate. Make a plan to get your family home safe without getting behind the wheel. Set the example and model responsible behavior for your children.

• If you know you will be drinking, designate a sober driver ahead of time or use a rideshare app.

• If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.

• Drive safely and within the speed limit to get to your destination and always wear your seatbelt.

• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
