Ready, Set, Play: Make Sports Physicals Part of Your Summer Checklist

A sports physical isn’t just a requirement—it’s a key step in making sure your child is healthy, safe, and prepared to play their best. Beat the back-to-school rush and learn why scheduling now sets your athlete up for success all year long.

Pre-participation exams are usually required by the school district or sports league and are important to ensure your child is physically ready to play. In addition, sports physicals are the best way to inform coaches about a player’s medical issues or previous injuries.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the pre-participation physical exam take place with the student-athlete’s primary care doctor. This allows for a complete and private visit with a physician who knows your child and is familiar with their health history, allowing them to evaluate any record of past injuries or concussions.

During your child’s sports physical, your CPCMG pediatrician will review your child’s medical records, family history and immunization records. We will also screen for mental health concerns and counsel the athlete on healthy habits like good nutrition, drug and alcohol avoidance, and playing sports safely. After completing a detailed medical exam, your CPCMG pediatrician will complete required paperwork or order referrals or further testing if needed.

And take note – scheduling your child’s sports physical this summer means that exam will cover your child for all sports during the following school year!
