I’m ready to get back to running, but is it ok to take my baby along in a jogging stroller?

Whether you are an experienced runner or just getting started, there are several things to keep in mind when bringing an infant on a run:

  1. The AAP does not recommend running with baby in a jogging stroller until they are at least six months old. For babies under six months of age, you can use a jogging stroller for walks but the stroller should have a car seat or bassinet attachment.
  2. Babies should have good trunk and neck control before sitting in a jogging stroller.
  3. Stick to running on smooth surfaces until your baby is 12 months old – they will have better core strength to deal with uneven surfaces.
  4. Buckle babies in EVERY time. Ensure that straps are adjusted to appropriate height and lap sizes.
  5. Get a jogging stroller with lockable back wheels (you will need to be able to lock it when not holding onto it).
  6. Don’t forget to pack a small diaper bag that includes water and snacks for you and your baby.
  7. Every few weeks or so, do a quick check of your jogging stroller’s tires (make sure they are inflated appropriately) and tighten any loose screws.
