Our family spends a lot of time outdoors. Is sunscreen safe for my baby?

Babies under 6 months of age should be in the least amount of direct sun as possible. If you are unable to totally avoid it, chose a mineral based sunscreen over exposure to direct sun. For babies over 6 months of age, mineral sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours.

Here are five tips to help protect your baby while outdoors:

  1. The best sun protection for babies is the shade. Be sure to use a stroller canopy, beach umbrella or pop-up tent if you must be outdoors.
  2. Stay out of the sun between 10am and 2pm (the sun is at its strongest and ultraviolet rays are most intense during this time).
  3. Choose for lightweight baby clothes like long pants and long-sleeve shirts, but make sure the fabric has a tight weave. If you can see your hand through the fabric, look for another option.
  4. Find a hat with a brim to provide full coverage for your baby’s face, ears, and neck.
  5. Babies haven’t developed the ability to sweat so they are at risk of dehydration. Watch for increased crying and skin redness.
